Tea is actually really good for you – so put the kettle on, yeah? Boil the kettle and brew that bag, because tea is really good for you. It’s warm, refreshing and seems to solve a multitude of problems, but do you know of the popular drink’s health benefits? With props to Clare Collins, a professor in nutrition and dietetics at the University of Newcastle, here’s why you should start sipping some rosy lee.
1. In a lot of places around the world, it’s safer to drink than water. Boiling water to make tea can get rid of liquid-borne bacteria – like the kind which causes cholera and typhoid. 2. Simulants found in tea can boost brain activity. Hot or cold, a brew is packed with caffeine, catechins and L-theanine. The drink has been found to increase alertness and ability to pay attention to detail – both auditory and visually. 3. It can speed up weight loss. Because tea contains a mixture of caffeine and catechin, it can often have a stimulating effect on fat break down. Oh and tea made by simply steeping a tea bag in boiling water contains little to no calories. Although this can be counteracted if anything is added to your brew – milk, sugar, honey, cream, etc. 4. It reduces risk of heart disease. Both black and green tea can significant reduce blood pressure. Black lowers LDL-cholesterol and green targets total cholesterol. 5. It’s hellish good at flushing out your body. Tea polyphenols possess pretty potent antioxidant powers. What are you waiting for? Stick the kettle on.
